Rick Perry is an American politician and member of the Republican party. He’s the 14th United States Secretary of Energy. He previously served as the 47th Governor of Texas. James Richard Perry was born on March 4, 1950 in Paint Creek, Texas. His parents Joseph and Amelia were ranchers. Perry earned the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award as member of the Boy Scouts. He later attended Paint Creek High School followed by Texas A&M University. He graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science.
CAREER
Prior to politics, Perry took pilot training with the United States Air Force. He flew C-130 tactical airlifts from 1974 to 1977. He also worked briefly in the cotton business with his father. Perry began his political career as a Democrat but switched to the Republican party in Fall 1989. He served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives for the 64th district from 1985 to 1991. Perry challenged Jim Hightower in 1990 for the position of Agriculture Commissioner of Texas. He held that position from January 1991 to January 1999.
Perry was named the 39th Lieutenant Governor of Texas in 1999. He later succeeded George W. Bush as the 47th Governor of Texas. He was elected to full gubernatorial terms in 2002, 2006 and 2010. Perry ran for the Republican nomination in the 2012 and 2016 presidential election. He dropped out of both races due to poor campaign performances. Perry was nominated as the Secretary of Energy by President Donald Trump in December 2016. His nomination was approved and he was sworn into office on March 2, 2017.
In addition to politics, Perry was a contestant on season 23 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. He was partnered with professional dancer and choreographer Emma Slater. They finished in 12th place.
